Toothaches can be one of the worse feelings in life, especially if the pain doesn’t stop with painkillers. But the pain can be much worse if you find out that you have overpaid for your dental procedures. To help you avoid the heartache of overpaying, we wrote this guide to the average cost of common dental procedures. It might come in handy one day.
Know how much your dental procedures should cost, so that your toothache doesn’t become a heartache
Average cost of dental check-ups
All dental procedures begin with a simple dental check-up. Whenever you visit your dentist, he would begin his check-up by checking on the health of your teeth and your gums. He would then advise on the number of fillings that you will need based on the condition of your decays, if any.
Depending on how healthy your teeth and gums are, your dentist will give you his recommendation for the time of your next visit. But generally, most dentists would advise you to visit your family dentist between one to four times a year.
If you are visiting the public dental clinic at SingHealth Polyclinics, diagnosis cost ranges between $15.10 to $25.50 for Singapore citizen. However, dental clinics are only available at Ang Mo Kio, Hougang, Jurong, Toa Payoh and Woodlands Polyclinics. Moreover, you will need to schedule your appointment way in advance because the public dental services at Polyclinics are by-appointment only. Polyclinic dental clinics also provide scaling, polishing and filling services. These are chargeable and excluded from the diagnosis cost.
If you choose to visit a private dental clinic, be prepared to pay between $80 to $150 for a dental check-up. One point to note is that dental check-ups at private clinics usually come in a package that includes both diagnosis and cleaning.
Average cost of wisdom tooth removal
Wisdom tooth is one of the most ‘troublesome’ set of teeth for any grown adult. Wisdom tooth, also known as third molars, is the last set of teeth to develop. Some of you might experience the emergence of wisdom tooth late into your puberty. Others might experience its emergence in adulthood. Because of their late emergence, wisdom tooth is always looking for space to grow. Wisdom tooth growing in your mouth is like trying to fit six passengers into a four-seater car. As a result, they almost always fail to grow out properly.
Sometimes, you might find your wisdom tooth growing diagonally or growing inside your gums. This can lead to a lot of pain for you. Most dentists recommend removing wisdom tooth before it starts to impact your teeth or your gums.
The cost of wisdom tooth removal is dependent on the complexity of your wisdom tooth situation. As a general rule of thumb, the more wisdom tooth that needs to be removed, the more it will cost you.
|Cost (Before GST)|
|1 Tooth||$450 – $900|
|2 Teeth||$700 – $1600|
|3 Teeth||$1400 – $2400|
|4 Teeth||$2300 – $4000|
Another factor for the cost is the complication of the wisdom tooth (impacted, tooth depth, root shape). If your wisdom tooth is impacted, it will lead to greater complexity in removing the tooth. Thus, it will cost you more to remove your impacted wisdom tooth. If your wisdom tooth is buried deep within your jawbone, the cost can also be higher. Wisdom tooth with irregular shapes or curved root shapes will be harder to extract and thus, costs more.
For those of you who do not want to pay for your wisdom tooth removal in cash, you can opt to pay using your Medisave. However, this only applies to public dental centres or private dental clinics that have been Medisave-approved.
Average cost of root canal treatment
Another common dental treatment that you might need is root canal. A root canal treatment is used to repair or save a tooth that has been badly decayed. During the process, the nerves of your tooth will be removed from within the tooth. After that, your tooth’s cavity will be cleaned and sealed to prevent infection. The cost of a root canal on each tooth is between $650 to $2,000 before GST.
|Cost (Before GST)|
|Average Cost Per Tooth||$650 – $2,000|
Unlike wisdom tooth extraction, you cannot use Medisave to pay for your root canal treatment. Medisave is only payable for a surgical procedure, according to Ministry of Health guidelines. Unfortunately, root canal is not considered a surgical procedure.
However, root canal treatments are still eligible for subsidies under the Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS). The total amount of subsidy is dependent on the complexity of the root canal treatment. The subsidy applies to the overall root canal treatment.
|Range of Subsidy (S$)|
|Blue Tier||$164 to $256.50|
|Orange Tier||$109.50 to $170.50|
|Pioneer Generation||$174 to $266.50|
