With a propelled surge in digital wallets and online banking in the recent past, even the traditional hongbao, something that’s indispensable to Chinese New Year festivities, is steadily being reinvented.

With Singaporeans progressing towards a cashless society, the possibilities of the “e-hongbao” have flown out of the small rectangle paper canvas. Subsequently, there is high competition among brands to give their red packets an edge over others. So much so, that a number of banks in Singapore have promotional offers going on for e-hongbaos this CNY.

Let’s check out 4 cool hongbao promotions by banks this CNY:

1. Standard Chartered Bank’s Disneyland-themed e-Angbaos

The Standard Chartered Bank has partnered with the Hong Kong Disneyland for its e-Angbaos this Year of the Earth Pig. All you got to do is to select PayNow on the Standard Chartered Bank’s mobile application, enter the recipient’s details and transfer the amount.

A summary of the e-Angbow with popular Disney characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse will appear which can be shared with the recipient!

2. Citibank’s e-hongbao feature on its PayNow money transfers

Citibank Singapore has launched a new e-hongbao feature in its app on February 1 to allow users to do fund transfers via PayNow, as reported by Today.

3. DBS launches QR Ang Baos

The DBS has launched loadable QR red packets named DBS QR Ang Bao to mark CNY festivities. Their customers can “now skip the queue for new notes” and collect the free e-Ang Baos at any of the DBS/POSB branches or pop-up ATMs.

DBS customers can simply scan the QR code on their e-Ang Baos, load it with money and send it to their loved ones using the DBS PayLah! The receivers can similarly scan the QR code on their e-Ang Bao on DBS PayLah to receive the money in their account.

There’s also a S$8,888 grand gift for a customer who gives or receives the highest number of qualifying QR Ang Bao transactions between 1 to 19 February, 2019. Plus there’s a daily prize of S$188 for the top 10 users with the highest number of qualifying transactions at the end of each day from 5 to 19 February, 2019.

4. CIMB handing out two angpows to its customers

The CIMB is handing out two ang pows to each of its customers as part of its CNY promotion, which will be distributed at the sales ambassadors/cash counters, and during account opening.

Preferred customers can collect their red packets at the CIMB Preferred Banking Centres (15th floor, Singapore Land Tower and Orchard Branch). Relationship managers will also mail the red packets to their existing Preferred Banking customers.
